Water Polo

Water polo is a fast-paced, physical, and exciting team sport that is quickly gaining popularity in Illinois. It can be described as a mix of basketball, hockey, and soccer - but it takes place in the water. At one time, each team enters six "field" players and one goalie. The point of the game is to score goals on the opponent (and not let the other team score on you).

At York, we have had great success over the past few seasons. In 2016, we won our IHSA Sectional Tournament and advanced to the State Tournament for the first time since 2008. In 2017 and 2018, we fell in the IHSA Sectional title game, but have had 20+ win seasons for the past three years. We finished in second place in conference in 2016, 2017, and 2018, after placing 3rd in 2013, 2014, and 2015. With lots of experience and young talent returning this year, we expect even more success in 2019.

There is no experience necessary when trying out for water polo. We teach new players the game when they come out for water polo freshmen year, and our goal is to have each player ready to compete at the varsity level by the time they begin their junior season.

Andrew Hausoul '21 Makes Olympic Development Team

Congratulations to York freshman Andrew Hausoul, who was recently selected to the USA Water Polo Midwest Zone ODP team.

The Olympic Development Program serves as the forum to identify and develop athletes to represent USA Water Polo throughout domestic and international competition.  The Midwest Zone is comprised of Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, and Kentucky.  Only the top 14 athletes were chosen for this zone team.

In order to be selected to the zone team, athletes were evaluated by both local and national staff members at selection camps.  Each zone team will compete in the ODP national championship tournament. The tournament will be comprised of approximately 16 teams from 13 ODP zones.  The Midwest Zone is only sending one team.

The tournament is conducted by the USAWP national staff and the USAWP High Performance Director. While the ODP national championship will be centered on competition, another major component will also focus on athlete development and experience.

The 2018 ODP National Championship will be held in Northern California. February 23-25.  At the National Championship, USAWP will select athletes to move on to the National Team Selection Camp by USAWP coaches, staff and support members. National Team Staff will select the top 48 athletes.
