York won the title after a tough completion Sunday evening against Glenbard East High School.  

 

In addition to the team award, York also received 6 individual awards. 

 

Lexi Lukose was the only student in the state to score a perfect score on the exam.

 

Katy Clugg, Lexi Lukose, Andrea Gurau received recognition for Best Attorney. While Katy Clugg and Anthony Aguilar received Best Witness. 

 

Maya Iyer, Sarah Martich, Ava Gehrke, Anika Jacob, Vanessa Bardoshi, and Elinor Kness all played key roles in the team’s success. 

 

Congratulations to all these amazing students and their coaches, Amy Mueller and Elizabeth Birchler.

The York  Math Team had a very successful Division 4A Regional meet. The team finished first overall allowing them to continue onto the State meet in May. The team had first place finishes by the Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Frosh-Soph 2 person, and the Junior-Senior 2 person teams. They also had second place finishes by the Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Frosh-Soph 8 person,  Junior-Senior 8 person and the Orals teams.

The York Math Team will next be competing in the North Suburban Math League Conference meet on March 6th at Glenbrook South High School.

Starting on Monday, February 25th, York Community High School will be celebrating Fine Arts Week! This tradition is over 30 years old, and recognizes the talents of York’s student musicians, dancers, actors, visual artists, singers, orators, poets and unique performance artists.

On Friday, March 1, YORK LIVE will feature a variety of student performances during three 50-minute live shows. Tickets are $10, but York students or any D205 middle school students get in free with a D205 ID.

This year's fundraising event will be Wednesday, February 27 at Elmhurst Brewing Company from 7-10 PM. There is a suggested donation of $5 at the door, with every cent going toward funding for next year's Fine Arts Week.

Congratulations to York students who participated in the Family Career and Community Leaders of America regional competitions at College of Dupage on January 25th and February 1st. FCCLA is a Career and Technical Student Organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation opportunities for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education. Students developed presentations, demonstrated skills, and showcased knowledge in areas such as nutrition, fashion, food production and design, children's literature, interior design, and professional careers. Students received individual awards based on their overall score. Additionally, the “Most Outstanding” (MO) distinction was awarded to the student who had the most exemplary project/performance out of all the competitors in their competition category.

On Thursday, February 7, 2019, at 7:30 PM, the York Community High School Orchestras will present a Winter Concert, including performances by the York Cadet, Concert and Symphony Orchestras and the Symphony Cello Ensemble, conducted by Ray Ostwald. The orchestras will offer a variety of repertoire including Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia, Alan Hovhanness’ Psalm and Fugue as well as music of Edvard Grieg, Giovanni Gabrieli, Samuel Adler and David Holsinger. Featured soloists include violinist Maya Toffler, violist Rylan Johnsen, cellists Emily Dow, Abigail Marianetti and Ruby Schwan and flutist Lauren Hund. The Symphony Cello Ensemble will also perform Franz Biebl’s setting of Ave Maria, arranged for seven-part cello ensemble. The York Symphony Cello Ensemble was selected to perform this month at the Illinois Music Education Conference in Peoria, Illinois. 

The concert will be in York’s Merle E. Baker Auditorium. Admission is free.

The Foundation has awarded over $1.6 million dollars in Thiems Educational Grants, a program named after former Superintendent Russell Thiems, who was instrumental in the creation of the foundation. The application for this year's Thiems Grants are due February 11th. Please note that grants involving technology will require the submission of a Technology Review form. 

We encourage innovation, creativity, and grants that help deliver curriculum that engages students. Registration will open at 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 8 for 24 hours.  During this initial registration period you may only register a student for one semester class with the exception of math classes where you may register for 2 semesters.  There will be no wait lists created during the first 24 hour registration period.  The 2nd registration period will open on Friday, January 11, with no restrictions.  At that time you will be able to put a student's name on a waitlist if the class is full.

CONGRATULATIONS DISTRICT 205 MUSIC STAFF!

 

More than 3000 students from over 75 schools throughout Northeastern Illinois auditioned for the honor of All-District and All-State Band, Chorus, Orchestra, and Jazz Band selection. The selected York student musicians selected for All-District participation performed last month at either the ILMEA District 1 Jazz Festival at Hinsdale South High School on November 10th or the ILMEA District 1 Band, Chorus, and Orchestra Festival at Oak Park River Forest High School on November 17th. Students selected for All-State participation will travel to Peoria, IL at the end of January to rehearse and perform at the All-State Festival on Saturday, January 26, 2019. It's hard to believe that final exams are just two weeks away. Below you will find the Semester One Final Exam schedule with reminders about our final exam policies. Remember...the best way to find success on final exams is through consistent hard work throughout the semester, so over the next few weeks, stay engaged in your classes and be sure to ask questions as they arise.   • Students should expect to have a Final Exam or Final Project in every class unless otherwise noted on the course syllabus. Finals count for up to 20% of the semester one grade.
  • Students must take exams during the regular exam period. No exams will be administered­ early; however, students who have three exams scheduled for one day may arrange to change one by contacting their counselor. Students should not ask their teacher to change an exam period.
  • Students are free to leave campus during times they do not have an exam. Study areas (Learning Commons and Math Lab) will be open if students have an open period and do not want to leave the building.  The TMC will be open until 3:10 on all days for Make Up exams.
  • There will be a 10-minute passing period between consecutive exams.
  • Breakfast will be available from 7:00-9:00 on all three exam days. Lunch service will be available from 11:00 - 12:00 on Wednesday and Thursday. There will not be lunch service on Friday, December 21st.
  • During finals, students in the multi-needs program and students who attend the Transition Center will meet for an instruction day from 7:40 to 1:30 on Wednesday and Thursday and from 7:40 to 11:00 on Friday.
  • Buses will run on regular schedules all three mornings. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, buses will depart at 1:40 with late buses departing at 3:30 and 4:30. On Friday, buses will depart at 11:00 with late buses departing at 1:45 and 4:30.

RECUPERACIÓN

 

Los estudiantes deben de recibir su Examen o Proyecto Final en su respectiva clase, a menos que sean indicado de manera diferente en su plan de estudios. Los resultados cuentan como el 20% de la calificación final del semestre por cada materia escolar.

  • Los estudiantes deberán tomar su examen final durante el período correspondiente. No se administrarán exámenes más temprano, sin embargo, aquellos estudiantes que tengan 3 exámenes finales en un mismo dia pueden hablar con su Consejero para cambiar el horario de uno de los 3. Los estudiantes no deberán contactar a su maestro para cambiar el periodo de su exámen.
  • Los estudiantes son libres de retirarse del edificio escolar durante los períodos que no tengan exámenes. También tendremos las áreas de estudio abiertas, tales como la Biblioteca y Laboratorio de Matemáticas, Learning Commons o Math Lab en inglés. El TMC (Centro de Transición) estará abierto hasta las 3:10 PM los días de Recuperación o exámenes extraordinarios.
  • Habrá 10 minutos entre períodos durante los 3 días de exámenes finales.
  • El desayuno estará disponible de 7:00 a 9:00 AM durante los 3 días de exámenes. El almuerzo será de 11:00-12:00 el miércoles y jueves, sin embargo el viernes 22 de diciembre, no tendremos almuerzo.
  • Durante los exámenes finales, aquellos estudiantes que estén en programas con necesidades especiales y también aquellos que van al Centro de Transición, se atenderán como un dia de instrucción regular de 7:40 AM -1:30 PM durante el miércoles y jueves, mientras que el viernes, el horario será de 7:40-11:00 AM en dicho Centro.
  • Los autobuses correrán sus rutas y horarios normales a la entrada en los 3 días de exámenes. A la salida del miércoles y jueves, los autobuses partirán a la 1:40, 3:30 y 4:30 PM. El viernes, los autobuses partirán a las 11:00 de la mañana, 1:45 y 4:30 PM.

York Parents and Guardians:

This afternoon, a 911 call was placed to Elmhurst Police Department, regarding the possible presence of a weapon in the building. The call follows a similar tip from a student. We immediately alerted Elmhurst Police Department, and our School Liaison Officers responded immediately to investigate. No weapon has been found. Instead, the noise reported has been confirmed to be a student playing a video game in a bathroom stall.

However, we continue to remain vigilant and alert. Officers will maintain a presence at the building though dismissal. The safety of our students and campus is of the utmost importance. We take seriously any tips or reports from our school community. All matters are shared with Elmhurst Police Department and our School Police Liaisons and thoroughly investigated.

We appreciate the swift and thorough action of our police department and the actions they take to keep our students and community safe.

On Thursday, November 29, 2018, at 7:30 PM, the York Community High School Orchestras will present a Holiday Concert, including performances by the York Cadet, Concert and Symphony Orchestras conducted by Ray Ostwald. The orchestras will offer a mixture of classical and seasonal favorites. Senior concerto competition winner Rylan Johnsen will perform the first movement of Carl Stamitz’ Concerto for Viola. Other featured works include Georges Bizet’s Farandole from L’Arlesienne, music from A Charlie Brown Christmas as well as music of J. S. Bach, Ottorino Respighi and W. A. Mozart.

 

The concert will be in York’s Merle E. Baker Auditorium. Admission is free.

As a part of Student Services, Lunch & Learns are now offered twice a month for all students on a variety of topics! This semester, Lunch and Learns run every other Friday during all lunch periods. Students do not need to sign-up to attend. Everyone is welcome! Students just grab their lunch and go to the CCRC about 10 minutes into the lunch period. 

 

So far this school year, we have covered study skills, stress management, and tech tools! The next Lunch & Learn will be Friday, October 26th during all lunch periods. We will be talking about Executive Functioning Skills 101 and giving students tools to enhance their organizational skills, time management, and more!

We wanted to send a reminder that on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, York Community High School will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT to all Juniors from the PSAT suite of assessments published by the CollegeBoard.  The tests have been paid for through the District, and nothing additional needs to be completed in order to register your child.

 

October 10th is a half day for students, but it is NOT a late arrival day: we will begin testing at 7:40 am, and students will be dismissed at the conclusion of their exam at approximately 11:30.  More information about what to bring and our bus schedule will be sent out closer to the exam date.  

 

We are also pleased to invite you to attend our annual "Junior Parent Night" program on Monday, October 15th at 7pm in the Auditorium.

 

In order to assist students and families as they embark on the post-high school planning process, we wish to provide information on the following topics:

  • Understanding of what colleges seek
  • Information about Standardized Testing (ACT/SAT) and Test Prep

Queremos recordarles que el miércoles, 10 de octubre la Secundaria York administrara un examen estandarizado a todos los estudiantes de primer año (Freshmen), segundo año (Sophomore), y tercer año (Juniors) de la suite de PSAT de los exámenes publicados por el CollegeBoard. Los exámenes han sido pagados por el Distrito y nada adicional debe ser completado con el fin de inscribir a su hijo/a.

 

El 10 de octubre es un medio día para los estudiantes, pero NO es un día de entrar tarde: vamos a comenzar los exámenes a las 7:40am, y se despedirán los estudiantes en los tres niveles de grado, así como los estudiantes en el Centro de Transición del Distrito 205 a la conclusión de su examen que será aproximadamente a las 11:30am. The Illinois Civic Mission Coalition (ICMC) has recognized York Community High School as an Illinois Democracy School. York will receive a stipend from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, which convenes the ICMC to continue civic learning initiatives, as well as a new banner for public display.

“Our high school people have worked very hard to ensure that the curriculum is relevant, and our social studies department is a prime example of that. Our vision is all students graduate college, career and life ready, and nothing defines life ready more in this country than the ability to effectively participate and function in a democratic society,” D205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer said.

York Community High School Principal Erin DeLuga added, “Mr. Mike DiNovo and the Democracy Schools team have worked tirelessly to attain recognition for York as a Democracy school. In that pursuit, we hope to provide enriching civic experiences for our students across content areas. It very much aligns to meeting each student where s/he thrives. It also strengthens our interdisciplinary efforts. Kudos to all of those who worked from the roots up.”

There have been a few cases of lice at York High School.  Please take the time to check your child for any signs and symptoms.  See information below from DuPage County Health Department.  

 

 

Lice (Head) Pediculosis Fact Sheet

 

Cause:  Pediculus humanus capitis, a louse. The life cycle of the louse is divided into three phases:

 

1. nits: eggs laid by adult females and are cemented at the base of the hair shaft nearest to the scalp, usually within 6 mm. Takes 1 week to hatch. Difficult to see but are oval and usually yellow to white.

 

2. nymph: hatched egg; resembles an adult but much smaller; matures in 9 - 12 days. Must feed on blood to survive.

 

3. adult: louse grows to about the size of a sesame seed, has 6 clawed legs, and is tan to grayish-white. It can live up to 30 days on the infested head and needs to feed on blood several times per day; it will die within 1-2 days off the host.

 

Lice infestation is most common in children 3 to 12 years of age. Girls get head lice more often than boys, women more often than men. They are found most commonly on the scalp behind the ears, at the nape of the neck. They are rarely found on the body, eyelashes, or eyebrows.

 

Symptoms: Itching of the scalp and neck. Look for:

*Crawling lice in the hair, usually few in number

*Eggs (nits) glued to the hair, often found at the back of the neck *Scratch marks on the scalp or back of neck at hairline

 

Spread: By direct contact with the head of another infested person. Indirect spread through contact with personal belongings of an infested person (as, combs, brushes, hats, scarves, bedding) is less likely but can occur. Transmission most often occurs among household members because of the close proximity of living conditions.

 

Lice do not jump or fly; they crawl and can fall off the head. Lice do not live longer than 48 hours off the head. They lay their eggs only while on the head. Nits which are more than ¼” from the scalp are dead or empty and will not hatch. Also, eggs do not hatch if they have fallen off. Lice do not spread to or from pets as they do not become infested. However, pets may carry the lice from one person to another. Avoid close contact with pets and refrain from permitting animals to sleep with household members during an infestation. Do not treat animals with medicines for humans.

 

Incubation Period: Eggs (nits) hatch in 7 – 10 days.

 

Period of Communicability:  Until treated with lice–killing medication, crawling forms of the louse are communicable; the nits are not.

 

Diagnosis: Head lice infestation is confirmed by inspecting the scalp and hair for the presence of nits, nymphs or live adult lice. Finding a nymph or an adult louse may be difficult because there are few of them and they move very quickly. If nits are visible farther than 6 mm from the scalp and no nymphs or adult lice are seen, the infestation is a past infestation and does not require treatment. If nits are discovered in the hair, but live lice are not seen, they can be re-inspected periodically for live lice. Adequate lighting should be used for the inspection as well as disposable sticks used to adequately separate the hair. A thorough examination may take several minutes.

 

Treatment: Pediculicides, either lice-killing shampoo or lotion, either purchased over-thecounter or by prescription (from a physician). Instructions must be followed carefully. Shampooing should be rinsed off over a sink rather than in a shower or tub, and with cool rather than warm water, to reduce skin absorption of the pediculicides. Do not use crème rinse before doing the treatment.

 

If live lice are seen after treatment, try a different brand.

 

For some medications, a second treatment is needed 7 – 10 days later to kill nits that have survived the first treatment.

 

Remove nits from the hair with a fine-toothed comb.

 

Wait 1-2 days before shampooing the hair but then shampoo at least twice a week for 2 weeks. Vigorously combing out the wet hair seems to slow down the lice.

 

Avoid over-use of pediculicides to avoid toxic exposure.

 

Prevention/Control:

 

1. Avoid sharing hair care items, towels, bedding, clothing, hats, and headgear.

 

2. Hang clothing in individual lockers or on assigned coat hooks. Hooks should be spaced at least 12 inches apart so that clothing does not touch.

 

3. Clean items such as clothing, furniture or carpeting that have come in contact with the head of the infested person in the 24 to 48 hours before treatment. Wash, soak or dry items at temperatures 130º F to kill stray lice or nits. Furniture, carpeting, car seats, etc., may be vacuumed. Items that cannot be washed can be dry cleaned or bagged in plastic for 2 weeks, by which time any nits that may have survived would have hatched and nymphs would be without food source. Pediculicide spray should not be used because the chemical exposure cannot be controlled. Nits are unlikely to incubate and hatch at room temperatures. Major cleaning measures are unnecessary.

 

Exclusion:  NOT NECESSARY

 

Lice infestation poses little risk to others and does not have a resulting health problem for the infested person. The person should be discouraged from having close direct head contact with others until the problem has resolved. Mass screenings, blanket notification to others of the situation, restricting use of safety helmets are not justified responses.

 

A parent/guardian/person should be notified of the situation at the end of the day and that prompt, proper treatment of the condition is in the best interest of the child and of his/her classmates/housemates and/or family. The person may return to the activities after the treatment is complete. The person’s head should be re-inspected 7-10 days later; if there is evidence of live lice or additional nits, the process of exclusion and treatment should be repeated. If the problem persists after the second treatment, a different product should be used. If the problem continues after the new product treatment, then a physician should be consulted for further advice.

Best Buddies is back for a second year at York High School! We had a great year last year and even took home the 'Rookie Chapter of the Year' for Illinois. Way to go Buddies! The Best Buddies Friendship Program builds one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering social mentoring while improving the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. 

 

Best Buddies provides the opportunity for people with IDD to form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences and activities with other students from their school. Ken Ross, York Industrial Technology Department Leader, announced that Joseph Gemini represented York High School as a SkillsUSA National Finalist, placing second in Technical Drafting/CAD at the Skills conference held June 25-29th in Louisville, Kentucky. York Community High School was represented by graduate Kevin Homan and Joseph Cornell, now a senior, at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) national leadership conference, held June 28-July 2 in Atlanta, Georgia. Kevin and Joseph were among the 4,500 STAR Event competitors who competed in 30 different Family and Consumer Sciences related competitive events.

 

Joseph earned a silver medal in the Culinary Arts competition, and Kevin earned a gold medal in the Say Yes to FCS Education competition.

 

York Family and Consumer Sciences Department teachers include Wendy Albert (Division Chair for Career and Technical Education), Laurie Foss, Lindsey Goldsmith, Sarah Marik, Rachael Marten and Ashley McDonough.

Come on out and support your York Dukes Football program on this Friday, August 17th for the Annual Green and White Scrimmage. Freshman will scrimmage at 4:15 pm, Sophomores at 5:00 pm, Eagles Youth programs at 5:45 pm and the Varsity at 6:30 pm. Tomorrow, Saturday, August 18th is our Green and White scrimmage for soccer starting at 9:30 am for lower levels and 12 pm for Varsity. Admission is free to all Green and White Scrimmage games. 

York will host New Trier on Friday, August 24th for the First Home Football game. Come out and support football, cheerleading, poms, flags and our talented marching band!

York students must show school ID for free admittance to athletic events. All students are expected to represent York High School while attending all events and adhere to the code of conduct signed by all students. There is a no re-entry policy at home football games. Students will not be allowed to reenter after they leave the game. Admission for adults is $4.00

Children under 14 years of age must be supervised by an adult. NO backpacks, bags of any type, water bottles, skateboards, bikes, footballs, etc. will be allowed through the gate.

District 205 policy prohibits alcohol, tobacco, and vaping on school property.

Apply for assistance by filling out a Request for Financial Assistance form and returning it to the main office of your child’s school, beginning the first week of August. 2018-19 Free/Reduced Lunch Application and Instructions (Español)

Completed free/reduced lunch applications must be turned in to your child's school for initial authorization, beginning the first week of August. All applications must be on the 2018-19 form. The District cannot accept old applications. Request for Financial Assistance/Waiver of Student Fees is due by November 15, 2018.

In mid-July, over 1,000 notification letters were mailed out to students who were automatically certified for free lunches last year (2017-18). Families who have received this letter DO NOT need to apply. However, if a letter is received for one child and there are other students in the family who did not receive a letter, please call the District 205 Food Service Office at 630-617-2436 to provide further information. Be sure to keep this letter, as you may need it for other programs and benefits (Comcast Internet Essentials, Park District programs, etc.).

On Tuesday, June 19, at the Board of Education meeting, Todd Schmidt was named the new Director of Facilities for Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205. Mr. Schmidt has 18 years of experience in facilities in the Rockford Public School District, serving as the Chief Operations Officer/Executive Director of Operations since 2009.

Mr. Schmidt has directed a department of approximately 900 in-house and privately contracted employees in Facility Maintenance, Custodial Services, Transportation, Nutrition Services, Student Assignment, Materials Management, Construction Engineering and Life Safety. He was responsible for $68 million in annual operating expenditures and $250 million capital improvement plan. Additionally, he has supervised the implementation of a $250M capital improvement plan that was the result of a successful ballot initiative.

“Todd has a wealth of knowledge and experience in facility management. He will be a huge addition to our facility team, and we are looking forward to working with him,” said Chris Whelton, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations.

Mr. Schmidt received the Governor’s Environment Hero Award in 2011 and is a veteran of the United States Navy.

This contains important information about completing student registration at York High School. Each student must complete the following steps to successfully register for the start of school:

  1. Complete Residency Verification
  2. Complete InfoSnap (District 205 online registration)
  3. Buy textbooks, Chromebooks, & pay fees

  1. Residency Verification

    Parents/guardians of all incoming 9th graders (and families that have leases that expire prior to the start of the school year) must provide documents to the district to verify residency. Click here for the list of valid documents. You will not have access to your student’s schedule or powerschool if you do not prove residency.

You may provide these documents on the following dates at York High School in room A118 (please enter the building at door #1) between 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.:

  1. InfoSnap (District 205 online registration)

    Parents must begin the registration process by going online and updating their student’s information using the District 205 registration website: www.elmhurst205.org/InfoSnap. At the beginning of May, InfoSnap emails (or letters if there is no email address on file) were sent to all families. Please note that families must complete InfoSnap prior to proceeding to the high school booksale process.

    For families without Internet access, computers will be available to complete InfoSnap during book sales in August. Families with questions regarding the online registration process may call 630-617-2458.

     
  2. Textbooks, Chromebooks & Fees

    The textbook list for the upcoming school year will be available on our Bookstore website now. The list can be found under the textbook tab. Please be aware that we are currently working to convert several texts to digital formats, which will be accessed by students on their Chromebooks. Book prices will be available in July.

    All incoming freshman as well as new students to District 205 will be required to purchase a Chromebook for $310.00 during booksales through the bookstore. Families cannot transfer a used Chromebook to a younger sibling.

     
  3. Booksales and Student Information Pick-Up

The final step of the registration process requires York students to purchase textbooks and Chromebooks, pay fees, take a yearbook photo, and pick up handbooks, IDs, and student schedules. This process is completed in person during the hours listed below. Beck’s Bookstore Express Checkout/Pre-Pack Option

 

Beck’s Bookstore will again offer the Pre-Pack option to speed up the booksale process. Express Checkout allows families to pre-order textbooks and pick them up during booksales. Beck’s “Search by ID” function will allow families to access a student-specific list of textbook titles and required course fees. Families interested in the Pre-Pack option can visit www.YorkHighSchoolBookstore.com. The site will be ready for orders in early July, and all orders must be placed by July 23, 2018. Express orders will be bundled and ready for pick up on the dates designated above. Books and course fees will be paid on the day the books are picked up.

 

Paying for Textbooks, Chromebooks and Fees

 

Textbooks, Chromebooks, fees and yearbooks can all be purchased in one transaction per student with cash, check, or credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa). Families with multiple students will have to bring multiple checks. All checks must be made payable to Beck’s Bookstore.

 

Financial Assistance Information

 

There are several options available for families in need of financial assistance:

  • District Financial Assistance for Student Fees and Books – Families that meet guidelines established by the District can receive assistance with fees, Chromebook and book costs. To receive assistance, the Request for Financial Assistance form must be completed and returned to the District Office with the required supporting documentation. After July 1st, these forms can be found on the District 205 registration website or in the York Principal’s Office.
  • Free and Reduced Lunch – Families that meet the federal guidelines are entitled to free or reduced lunch. To receive assistance, the Free and Reduced Lunch form must be completed and returned to the District Office. After July 1st, these forms can be found on the District 205 registration website or in the York Principal’s Office.

Each student will receive an ID and lanyard during registration which must be worn by the student at all times. The ID also serves as an activity pass. Student IDs are also required to ride the bus and enter the cafeteria.

 

Student Schedules

All students will receive their schedules during booksales in August.

 

Physicals

Incoming freshmen, transfer students and athletes must have current physicals. Forms are available on the York website and at www.elmhurst205.org. An athletic physical does not meet the requirements for a Freshman Physical.

 

Due to a change in the State’s immunizations requirements, all seniors must provide proof of two doses of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine to the high school by the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

 

Food Service Plan

A staff member from York Food Services will be available during booksales to assist families and provide information regarding our food service options.

On August 25, Churchville Middle School will be celebrating the sixth year of its Churchville Charge “fun”draising event. This exciting event features teams of four adults “racing” around Elmhurst City Centre solving clues and performing fun tasks at local businesses. Registration is open now through Friday, July 13 and spots are filling up quickly, so interested teams should visit this link to secure their spot.

The Churchville Charge is the primary fundraising event for Churchville Middle School and all money collected helps the Churchville PTA fund many educational and social events throughout the school year. Many local Elmhurst businesses, including Judith B Salon, Rosati’s Pizza and Tannins Wine Bar are taking part in the event, either as a race stop location or through generous raffle donations and sponsorships. The event culminates in a huge post-race party at Fitz’s Spare Keys in downtown Elmhurst, and features a raffle, music, and more.

Elmhurst School District 205 ​is conducting ​an ​annual verification of residency for all incoming freshman students at​tending​ York High School AND families who have leases that expire prior to the start of school. This is to help ensure that only students who legally reside within the District’s boundaries receive educational services funded by District tax dollars.

Residency Verification:
Residency documentation must be presented in person for every student. 


Proofs of Residency (A total of three proofs of residency are required as outlined below)

  • A current real estate bill showing parent/guardian as the owner (May 2018)
  • A current original signed lease showing the parent/guardian as the tenant 
  • A current mortgage statement showing the parent/guardian as the owner

On May 23rd, at approximately 3:36 p.m., the Elmhurst Police Department responded to Churchville Middle School, located at 155 Victory Parkway for a reported suspicious person. Upon the arrival of police, officers learned a 12-year-old female reported that while outside of the school shortly after dismissal, a male/Hispanic, approximately 35-40 years old, with short dark hair and a mustache, driving a Black Toyota Sienna minivan asked her if she needed a ride. The Toyota Sienna was parked in the pick-up lane of the school. The subject started to exit the vehicle and the female immediately ran away from the area. The area was checked by police, but was not able to locate the vehicle.

A school surveillance video captured a picture the vehicle in front of one of the doors. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Elmhurst Police at 630-530-3050.

Congratulations to all of the York SkillsUSA members that competed this past April 19-21 at the 2018 State SkillsUSA Conference and Competition in Springfield , ILL. 

 

Two of our students repeated their outstanding performances from last year.  Joey Gemini placed 1st in the Technical Drafting CAD Competition and Matt Shepherd placed 2nd in the  Screen Printing Technology Competition. 

 

By placing 1st in the Technical Drafting CAD Competition, Joey has qualified to compete at the National SkillsUSA Competition and Conference to be held the last week of June in Louisville, Kentucky.

  • The Final Culminating Activity may look different in each course: traditional Final Exam, Final Project, Final Performance, or other Final Culminating Activity as defined by the course team (ex. AP exam).
  • All traditional Final Exams will be given during the Final Exam schedule above.
  • Performance-based or project-based Final Culminating Activities may be due the day prior to the final exam schedule. In this case, students in the class do NOT need to report to that class on Final Exam days.
  • During the Final Exam days, students should NOT report to PE, Study Hall, Guided Study (SpEd), Algebra Support, Study Tables, or Resource classes. 
  • The Testing Center will be open during each final exam period for exams that have been rescheduled by a counselor and all extended time tests, and all make-up exams will be given after 1:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday and after 11:00 on Thursday.
  • Students must take exams during the exam period in which they are scheduled. No exams will be administered­ early; however, students who have three exams scheduled for one day may arrange to change one by contacting their counselor. Students should NOT ask their teacher to change an exam period.
  • All students are free to leave campus during times they do not have an exam. Study areas (Learning Commons and Math Lab) will be open if students have an open period and do not want to leave the building. Students must only be in attendance when they have an exam.
  • There will be a 10-minute passing period between consecutive exams.
  • Breakfast will be available from 7:00-9:00 on all three exam days. Lunch service will be available from 11:00 - 11:50 on Tuesday and Wednesday; there will be no lunch service on Thursday, May 24th .
  • During finals, students in the TLS program and students who attend the Transition Center will meet for an instruction day from 7:40 to 1:30 on Tuesday and Wednesday and from 7:40 to 11:00 on Thursday.
  • Buses will run on regular schedules all three mornings. On Tuesday and Wednesday, buses will depart at 1:40 with late buses departing at 3:30 and 5:00. On Thursday, buses will depart at 11:00 with a late bus departing at 3:00.

We are pleased to announce that York High School will be offering the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test on June 9th from 8:00-11:00 The ASVAB is the most widely-used multiple choice aptitude test battery in the world: it measures development abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. 

 

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is a comprehensive program that is offered at no cost, with NO COMMITMENT to the armed forces, and is designed to help young people align their strengths and interests with career planning. The program explores the following areas: General Science, Word Knowledge, Mathematics, Mechanical comprehension, Arithmetic reasoning, Paragraph comprehension, Electronic information, Assembling objects, and Shop information. 

 

The exam results will be mailed directly to students and to York High School and a follow up career workshop will be offered on a future date following the test administration. THE TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL PUTNUM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

 

York Drama is proud to present the return of the smash hit “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” as their 2018 Alumni Production. This ONE-NIGHT-ONLY performance will take place on June 8th at 7:30PM in the  Baker Auditorium at York High School. Tickets will be available beginning May 11 at www.Ticketpeak.Com/YorkDrama.

 

Originally performed at York in 2010, the alumni cast will feature original cast members Brian Kulaga (Class of 2010) and Brian Smith (Class of 2011), returning to their roles as William Barfee and Vice Principal Douglas Panch. We will NOT be running an alternate final exam schedule for senior finals on Tuesday, May 15th, and Wednesday, May 16th: we will run a typical bell schedule, and teachers will provide a final exam for seniors that can be completed within a regular 50-minute class period.

 

Teachers will take attendance in classes for both days since we are on a regular bell schedule; however, in order to be sure that seniors aren't overwhelmed on either the first or second day, seniors will take finals during their 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th period courses on Tuesday, May 15th. They will then take their 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th period final exams on Wednesday, May 16th.

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked York Community High School 17th within Illinois, awarding it a silver medal. Last year, York was ranked 18th in the state in this listing. Nationally, YCHS is ranked 703. Students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® (AP) course work and exams. The AP participation rate at York High School is 56 percent, with a 90% participant pass rate. The student body makeup is 51 percent male and 49 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 25 percent. York Community High School is the only high school in Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205.

On May 9, U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in education rankings and civic journalism, released the 2018 edition of Best High Schools. The rankings evaluate more than 20,500 public high schools nationwide to identify schools that best serve all of their students – including historically underserved populations – and assess the degree to which students are prepared for college-level coursework.

"I am very proud of the work of our people at York High School and also across the entire District,” said Superintendent Dr. David Moyer. “This designation is a culmination of hard work by teachers at all grade levels and demonstrates a commitment to strong public education by the community of Elmhurst. The support of our parents and the residents of District 205 is unparalleled.”

Dr. Moyer noted “There have been many instructional improvements in this District in recent years, such as the 1:1 personalized mobile learning implementation and the addition of instructional coaches at all of our schools. The Board of Education has demonstrated incredible support for these forward-looking enhancements. All rankings are somewhat arbitrary and don't ever tell the entire story, but I am proud that we moved up a spot relative to last year, especially considering that nine of the schools ranked ahead of us are highly-selective magnet or private schools."

Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 is evolving in many ways as it seeks to prepare our students for a future we can only imagine. Future Ready is more than a catch phrase. It is a commitment to empowering and equipping our students with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to be college, career and life ready.

Our District is working to deliver future focused curriculum and provide supportive learning environments for all students. In order to do that, we have embarked on a journey to address aging facilities and infuse our schools with the necessary tools to achieve that goal. The Focus 205 community engagement process, which began in 2015, was the first step. Master Facility Plan (MFP) work continues today; click here for more information and a meeting schedule.

Our community has long valued small class sizes and neighborhood schools. Elementary school class size targets are 25 in grades K-2 and 27 in grades 3-5. The current average class size in District 205 is 21.8. Occasional enrollment anomalies mean that class sizes are not consistent; some are below target and others are close to high end of the range. School capacity (percent of space that is being utilized) is another issue in District 205. Some of our buildings are overcrowded; others are operating at nearly full capacity, and some are underutilized. This poses instructional and staffing challenges that may increase as the community of Elmhurst continues to grow.

One potential component of the draft Master Facility Plan is boundary adjustments. The District realizes that any adjustments, even those that impact less than 5% of students, families, and/or houses, will be difficult. The options that have been presented to the Board of Education, and are being shared with the community, are preliminary. This is a work in progress and community feedback will be an important part of the process as we move forward.

Boundary adjustments can provide a long-term solution to overcrowding and student population “bubbles.” When schools are evenly sized and utilization is consistent, it is easier for the District to adhere to class size targets and maintain appropriate staff-to-student ratios. Consistencies like these help all students learn and grow.

D205 hired Cropper GIS in early 2018 to conduct a boundaries study. The primary goals were to increase space to accommodate All Day Kindergarten and balance class sizes across the District. The District asked the Cropper team to identify solutions that would affect the least number of families possible.

Two options (A and B) were presented to the Board on April 10. Both addressed ADK and balancing class sizes.  They also provided potential options for housing students during construction at Lincoln and Field Schools, two of our oldest buildings at 103 and 87 years old, respectively.

In response to feedback from the Board of Education and parents, the administration asked Cropper to see if there were alternative solutions that could meet the criteria and better preserve natural barriers such as train tracks and major roads. Two additional options (C and D) were developed and presented to the Board on May 8. Option D impacts the fewest students (3.6%), does not require busing students who currently walk, preserves natural barriers and does not send any students away from new construction, but also does not preserve contiguous boundaries.

Developing these additional options emphasizes the importance of community feedback. The plans remain a work in progress. No decisions have been made, nor will any changes be made in the immediate future. The Board will consider how it wants to move forward with the boundary discussion at its May 22 meeting. Options A, C and D are linked below.

Boundary adjustments would only be considered in a Master Facilities Plan that includes All Day Kindergarten. The District is committed to ensuring that current students will not be impacted by boundary adjustments and will be developing “grandfathering” provisions to minimize the impact on siblings and families. As with the entire process, we will be seeking community input on this portion of the plan as well. Our goal is to minimize the impact on individual families and achieve the goals outlined above.

Four community meetings have been scheduled. Draft plans, budgets, and potential boundary adjustments will be presented. The presentations will be followed by small group discussions. All attendees will have the opportunity to provide additional feedback via an electronic exit survey. Meeting dates:

  • Wednesday, May 23, 2018, 7 pm @ Bryan Middle School
  • Wednesday, May 30, 2018, 7 pm @, Sandburg Middle School

At its May 8 meeting, the Board of Education heard an update from the All Day Kindergarten Committee. In the state of Illinois, 79% of 859 districts are offering all-day programs, as of 2015.

 

“All Day Kindergarten educates the whole child in a developmentally appropriate manner,” said Lincoln Principal Jen Barnabee. “It enhances the legacy of Elmhurst by supporting students to reach their full potential. Children in full day classes excel in reading, number knowledge, writing and self-regulation versus their half-day peers. A full day program provides us the time to make the learning experience for our youngest students even better. They deserve the same robust, inter-disciplinary as the rest of our students receive.”

On Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 7:30 PM, the York Community High School Music Department will present a special performance by the York Symphony Orchestra. The concert will honor the graduating class of 2018, and will feature two senior concerto competition winners. Nathan Brown will perform the second movement of Emmanuel Séjourné’s 2015 Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra. Matthew Dardick will perform Henri Tomasi’s Ballade for Saxophone and Orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra will perform the first movement of Beethoven’s powerful Symphony No. 5, Modest Mussorgsky’s tone poem  A Night on Bald Mountain, Frederic Chopin’s Polonaise Op. 40, No. 1 and John Williams’ music from Jurassic ParkThe York Symphony Orchestra is directed by Ray Ostwald. A reception honoring the students will follow the concert in the cafeteria. The performance is in Baker Auditorium at York High School. Admission is free.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 7:30 PM, the York Community High School Music Department will present performances by the York Cadet and Concert Orchestras. The concert will honor members of the graduating class of 2018, and will feature a variety of music including works by the Italian Baroque master Arcangelo Corelli, a tango by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzola and selections from Disney movies Beauty and the Beast and Brave. Featured soloists include violinists Elizabeth Yu and Adrian Zhuang, violist April Fatheree, cellists Caitlin Forbes and Zoe Daniel as well as Julian Wrobel on harpsichord. The orchestras are directed by Ray Ostwald. The performance is in Baker Auditorium at York High School. Admission is free. A reception honoring the student musicians will follow the concert in the cafeteria.

Dear Graduating Seniors and Parents:

Commencement for the Class of 2018 is scheduled for Sunday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the Joe Newton Field House at York High School. The graduation ceremony is our last opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments at York and we want to make this a memorable event for you and your family. Please take a few moments to review the following important information.

On May 20th, graduates must report to York by 12:00 noon. At the same time, doors will open for the public. Parking will be very limited, so we encourage you to carpool, if possible. Beginning at 11:50 a.m., we will provide continuous shuttle service from the commercial parking lot located on Rt. 83 near Whole Foods.

Graduation Tickets
Each graduate will receive six tickets. Please note that no one will be admitted to the ceremony without a ticket. Tickets will be distributed after graduation practice on May 18th. Handicapped seating will be available. Please note if you request 2 handicapped seats, that will be counted as part of your six tickets. Please fill out this form (click here) to request handicapped seating.

We recognize that graduation is a special time for families and that sometimes families need more than 6 tickets for the ceremony. For those families who will need additional tickets, please fill out the extra ticket request form (click here).  We will process extra ticket requests after Monday, May 7th. We will do our best to accommodate as many of the request within reason. Graduation will also be available to be viewed on line for those families who are unable to attend in person.

Senior Checkout and Cap and Gown Pickup
Senior checkout and cap and gown distribution will be held in the South Gym on Friday, May 18th, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30am. All senior obligations must be paid by this day in order to receive their cap and gown. If you have an outstanding obligation, you have recently received a letter from Assistant Principal McGuire.

 

Mandatory Graduation Rehearsal
There will be a mandatory graduation rehearsal on Friday, May 18th at 12:45 p.m. Students must be in attendance at the rehearsal in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.

It is important to note that participation in the graduation ceremony is voluntary. If you choose not to participate in the ceremony, your parent must notify the school in writing. Please submit this correspondence to Kelly Corry in the Principal’s Office no later than 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 17th.

 

Scholarship Information for Graduation Program
As part of the graduation program, we want to recognize all seniors who have been awarded scholarships by the college they plan to attend and by other agencies. To ensure that we recognize all awards, please provide us with your scholarship information by completing the Awards/Scholarship form by Monday, May 7th. We have the information on scholarships presented at York High School during our awards nights. Therefore, you do not need to provide this information again.

La Ceremonia de Graduación para los estudiantes de la Clase 2018 (Año de Graduación) está programada para el próximo domingo 20 de mayo a la 1:00 PM en el Gimnasio Joe Newton en York. La Ceremonia de Graduación es nuestra última oportunidad de celebrar sus logros en la Preparatoria York y queremos hacer de este evento algo memorable, para ustedes y su familia. Por favor, tomen unos momentos para leer la siguiente información.

En el día de la Ceremonia, el día 20 de mayo, todos los estudiantes que van a graduarse deben de reportarse a la preparatoria York a las 12:00 del día. En ese momento se abrirán todas las puertas al público. En punto de las 11:50 p.m. empezaremos a ofrecer un servicio de transporte gratuito de ida y de regreso a un estacionamiento cerca de la ruta 83 por la tienda Whole Foods para su conveniencia.

Boletos para la Ceremonia de Graduación

Cada estudiante que se va a graduar recibirá 6 boletos. Por favor tome nota que nadie será admitido en la ceremonia sin boleto. La distribución de la Toga y el Birrete será en el Gimnasio sur el viernes 18 de mayo entre las 8:00 y las 11:30 de la mañana. Todos los adeudos de los Seniors deberán de haber sido saldados en orden de recibir su Toga y su Birrete. Ensayo General Mandatorio

El ensayo general es mandatorio y será el viernes 18 de mayo a las 12:45 p.m. Los estudiantes deben de haber participado en este ensayo en orden de poder participar en la Ceremonia de Graduación misma.

Congratulations to the following six York High School students who participated in the Tenth Midwest Chinese Speech Contest at Northside College Preparatory High School on April 21st. The Chinese Speech Contest was hosted by the MidwestChinese Teachers Alliance (MCTA). This year there were about 200 students who participated in this contest, in which the high school division had 137 contestants, outnumbering all other divisions. Each high school (9-12) teacher could enter no more than one student to participate in the contest.

Duke Decision Day is Tuesday, May 1st during all lunch periods in the Commons. It is an annual York event, sponsored by the College & Career Resource Center and the PTSA Academic Boosters, to celebrate seniors' symbolic commitment to the college, military, or post-secondary plan of their choice.
 
Seniors are invited to wear their college, trade school, or military spirit wear to school. Place a marker on the giant map in the Commons to share your post secondary plans.  Class pens are given to seniors by the PTSA Academic Boosters. The College & Career Resource Center will be collecting student's freshman year scholarship information. All York students are invited to stop by and see what the future holds for the Class of 2018.

Elmhurst School District 205 ​is conducting ​an ​annual verification of residency for all incoming freshman students attending​ York High School AND families who have leases that expire prior to the start of school. This is to help ensure that only students who legally reside within the District’s boundaries receive educational services funded by District tax dollars. 

Residency Verification:

Residency documentation must be presented in person for every student. 

Proofs of Residency (A total of three proofs of residency are required as outlined below)

One of the following for the residence at which the student(s) reside(s):​

  • A current real estate bill showing parent/guardian as the owner (May 2018)
  • A current original signed lease showing the parent/guardian as the tenant 
  • A current mortgage statement showing the parent/guardian as the owner

AND

Two of the following showing the address for the residence at which the student(s) reside:


Preferred Documents: 

  • A current gas bill 
  • A current electric bill 
  • A current water/sewer bill 
  • A current cable bill 

Acceptable Documents: 

  • A current driver’s license (or State ID card)
  • A current home or apartment insurance certificate
  • A current Department of Immigration Letter

Please note the following: 

  • Original documents must be presented in person. Copies or mailed documents will not be accepted. We will copy your documents on the spot and return the originals to you. 
  • Partial documentation will not be accepted. All documents must be presented in order to be processed.

District 205 parents must bring verification to your child's current school between May 3 and May 31. ​

Failure to provide proof of residency will result in the student’s schedule being pulled and course selections removed. If you have any questions about residency verification, please contact ​your middle school directly.

The final calendar of the 2017-18 school year was approved at the April 24 Board of Education meeting. Below is a list of last days and dismissal times. Both the calendar and last days are posted on the District website's calendar page. They are:

          May 24th:  Last day of school for high school students

Juniors and Seniors -

York Prom will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2018, at the Crystal Gardens of Navy Pier in Chicago. Below is important information for students and parents.

 

This all-inclusive evening includes transportation to and from the Prom, a strolling dinner and dessert reception, soft drinks, and dancing at the Crystal Gardens. The cost of the Prom is $110. The Post Prom cruise aboard the Odyssey has been arranged by the PTSA. The optional cruise continues to be a very popular option and, once again, promises to complete a memorable night. Tickets for Post Prom are $35 per person for a total of $145.

 

Check-in will begin at 6 p.m. at the school. York High School does not permit the use of limousines to drop students off at school and students will be unable to attend if they use one. Bus service on a luxury coach will be provided and required to and from Navy Pier. The luxury coaches will leave York High School at 6:30 p.m. Prom will begin at 7:45 p.m. and end at 11:45 p.m. The Post Prom cruise boards at 12 a.m. and ends at 2:30 a.m. The Post Prom buses will return to York around 3:15 a.m. Buses for students not attending Post Prom will return around 12:30 a.m.

 

To purchase a Prom ticket, students must follow this procedure:

1. Fill out the Prom Ticket Request form (using their Elmhurst205 account) at bit.ly/yorkprom18 and obtain a confirmation number. Every student who plans to attend Prom must complete his/her own information form. (If you are bringing a non-York guest, you must complete the guest information).

2. Have the attached letter filled out and signed, and then present it at the time the ticket is purchased.

 

Seniors may purchase Tickets for the Prom & Post Prom from April 3rd through April 19th. At this time, seniors have the option to buy a ticket for one guest (who does not need to be a senior), but both tickets must be purchased at the same time. Juniors may purchase tickets from April 6th through April 19th. Payment is by cash,checks (payable to Beck’s Bookstore) or credit card.  No tickets will be sold after Thursday, April 19th. Due to the capacity aboard the Odyssey Cruise ship, only the first 712 students will be able to attend. We have a capacity of 920 students at Prom.

Bus assignments are made at the time of ticket purchase. If you are wanting to be on a bus with your group, you must plan to purchase tickets at the same time. There will be no bus assignment switches made and students are not allowed to change bus assignments on their own.

 

If a junior or senior student is purchasing a ticket for a guest from another school, the guest and parent/guardian must complete and sign a separate Guest Request Form available in the Dean’s Office. York students must accompany their non-York guests at all times throughout the evening, including Post Prom.

 

The PTSA has generously agreed to help pay for the luxury buses to help keep the combined cost of Prom and Post Prom at $145 per person. If you need assistance with the cost of Prom, please have your senior student contact his/her counselor or social worker.

 

All school rules and conduct regarding alcohol, tobacco, vape pens, etc. will be enforced at this function and apply to the student and their guest (see Student Handbook for rules). Noncompliance with these rules will result in removal from the dance, and parents will be contacted to pick up their student. Any other disciplinary action will be applied and will be subject to additional consequences as deemed appropriate by the administration.  The dress code is formal. Any student whose attire is deemed inappropriate by the administration will not be given a refund. Students are not permitted to bring large purses or bags on the bus, and all carry-on items will be subject to inspection.

 

Due to our binding contracts with Crystal Gardens, Coach USA, and the Odyssey cruise company, we will be unable to provide refunds for students who choose not to attend Prom or Post-Prom after April 19, 2018. Students may not sell their tickets to another student. Tickets must be purchased from the bookstore ONLY.

La fiesta de graduación llamada Prom se llevará a cabo el día 28 de abril en el Salón de Fiestas Crystal Gardens de Navy Pier en Chicago. Esta carta contiene información importante para todos los Padres de Familia y estudiantes.

 

Este será un evento que incluye desde la transportación de ida y regreso, la cena, la recepción y el baile en el Salón Crystal Gardens. El costo del boleto para este evento es de $110.00 dólares. También habrá un crucero después de la recepción llamado Post Prom en el barco Odyssey. El mismo ha sido organizado por la Organización de Padres, Estudiantes y Maestros, PTSA. El crucero es opcional, pero continúa siendo una opción muy popular entre los jóvenes, y una vez más, hace de esta noche algo memorable. Los boletos para el crucero Post Prom son de $35.00 dólares adicionales por boleto, haciendo la cantidad total de $145.00 dólares por persona si incluye el crucero.

 

La llegada a la escuela y el registro al evento será a las 6:00 de la tarde del día 28 de abril. La Preparatoria York no permite el uso de limosinas para dejar a los estudiantes en la escuela, si hubiera algún estudiante que la use, no tendrá la oportunidad de ir al evento. 1.- Llenar la forma para ordenar los boletos (Prom Ticket Request Form) usando su cuenta de correo de Elmhurst 205 en bit/ly/yorkprom18, y obtener una confirmación de la misma. Cada estudiante que planee asistir a la fiesta de graduación Prom tiene que completar la forma con toda su información personal. Si algún estudiante desea traer a un invitado que no sea estudiante de York, también deberá llenar el formato de invitado.

2.- Llene la forma anexa, fírmela y preséntela al momento que comprar y recoger sus boletos.

 

Los estudiantes del Grado 12º o Seniors pueden comprar sus boletos para la fiesta de graduación Prom y el Crucero Post Prom del 3 al 19 de abril. En ese momento, los estudiantes Seniors también tienen la opción de comprar un boleto más para un invitado (el invitado no tiene que ser Senior), pero ambos boletos deben de ser comprados al mismo tiempo. Los estudiantes del 11º Grado o Juniors, pueden comprar sus boletos del 6 al 19 de abril. Los pagos puedes llevarse a cabo en efectivo o por cheque (si es en cheque, por favor diríjalo a Beck’s Bookstore). No se venderán boletos después del jueves 19 de abril Debido a que la capacidad del Crucero Odyssey Cruise es sólo de 712 personas, sólo esta cantidad de boletos será vendida específicamente para el crucero Post Prom. La capacidad para Fiesta de Graduación Prom es de 920 estudiantes.

 

La asignación de los autobuses será hecha al momento de comprar los boletos. Si su estudiante quiere ir con un grupo específico de amigos, deben de comprar sus boletos al mismo tiempo. No podrán cambiar de autobús una vez hecha la asignación del mismo.

 

Si algún estudiante Junior o Senior está comprando un boleto para algún otro estudiante de otra escuela, el padre de familia o guardián de dicho invitado, deberá de completar la forma para invitado o Guest Request Form que está disponible en la oficina del Decano Escolar o Dean’s Office. Los estudiantes de York deberán de estar en todo momento con sus invitados, tanto en la fiesta como en el crucero.

 

La Organización PTSA ha decidido generosamente donar el dinero para el costo de la transportación en los autobuses de lujo, haciendo así que el boleto por cada persona para este evento se mantenga en $145.00 dólares por persona. Si necesita ayuda con el costo de los boletos para la fiesta de graduación Prom, por favor indique a su estudiante Senior que contacte a la brevedad posible a su Consejero(a) o Trabajadora Social.

 

Todas las reglas escolares y el código de conducta en relación al uso de tabaco, alcohol, plumas de vapor con nicotina etc., serán reforzadas en este evento y aplicadas a todos los estudiantes junto con sus invitadoras (Usted puede ver el libro de Reglas Escolares o Handbook para su referencia). Él que no siga las reglas de conducta, se removerá del baile y se contactará directamente a sus padres para que recojan a su estudiante. Debido a nuestros acuerdos y contratos con el Salón de Baile, Crystal Garden, con la compañía de autobuses, Coach USA y con la compañía de cruceros, Odyssey Cruise Co. No tenemos la oportunidad de ofrecer ningún rembolso para aquellos estudiantes que no puedan ir, ni a la Fiesta de Graduación Prom ni al crucero Post Prom, si no nos lo hacen saben antes del 19 de abril. Los estudiantes no pueden re-vender sus boletos a otros estudiantes. Los boletos UNICAMENTE podrán ser comprados y recogidos en la Librería Escolar de Bookstore.

The City of Elmhurst’s Commission on Youth honored young volunteers at its annual Exemplary Youth Service Awards program held Wednesday, April 18, at Sandburg Middle School in front of a packed house. Ken Bartels served as Master of Ceremonies. District 205 Superintendent Dr. David Moyer and Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley welcomed the honorees and their families.

The Exemplary Youth Service Awards program recognizes individuals who have demonstrated at least one of the following criteria through volunteer service: the level of involvement should demonstrate an exemplary commitment; the service must contribute to the health and well–being of a worthy individual or group or the community at large; the service should help promote the spirit of volunteerism.

The 83 honorees ranged in age from elementary through high school. Nine groups and 18 individuals were nominated for this year’s awards. Serving as distinguished judges were Elmhurst Police Deputy Chief Michael McLean, Deputy Fire Chief Bill Anaszewiczand Alderman Marti Deuter.Speakers for the evening included Exemplary Youth Service Award recipients from Kartwheels for Kids, a group of five York High School students who have been volunteering and fundraising together since they were fifth graders.

Other Exemplary Youth Service Award recipients included an elementary group known as the Sweet Treats and the following individuals: from Churchville Middle School – Jackie Cimino and Cayliann Gillie and from York High School – Sean Hayes, Dani Kolosiekeand Samantha Uditsky.

The program will air on Uverse Channel 99 and Comcast Channel 6 next month and will also be available for viewing at www.ElmhurstTV.com. The program is linked below.

On Tuesday, April 24, at the D205 Board of Education meeting, there will be a presentation by architects Wight & Company, which will highlight various facility options, overlaid with findings from Focus 205. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM at the District 205 Administrative Center, 162 S. York. All community members are welcomed to attend. The Illinois Athletic Directors Association has named York High School's Assistant Principal for Athletics, Rob Wagner, as the Class 3A & 4A Division 3 Athletic Director of the Year. He will be honored at an awards banquet that will be a part of the IADA State Conference in East Peoria on Saturday, May 5th at 7:00 pm at the Embassy Suites Hotel in East Peoria. Rob has been at York for 15 years. Eight years as the Athletic Director/Assistant Principal for Athletics. This is his second term in the athletic office.

Tickets for the York spring musical Tuck Everlasting are sold out. HOWEVER, we encourage you to come to sign up for our wait list. The wait list will open 90 minutes prior to each show (6 PM Thursday - Saturday, April 19-21 and 12:30 PM on Sunday, April 22). You must be present to sign up for the wait list (no email entries will be allowed).

At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, the Board heard from three teachers and an instructional coach about how the infusion of technology via the District’s Mobile Learning Implementation has dramatically changed student engagement in their classrooms. They also provided teacher feedback samples on the topics of creativity, student-to-device ratios and device types.

A video created by the Communications Office demonstrated these new and exciting modes of learning and teaching. Assistant Superintendent of Innovation & Growth Dr. Mark Cohen noted that “these skills fit our concept of being future ready and future focused, allowing for collaboration in the digital space beyond the walls of the classroom.”

Nine York Community High School seniors named among the 16,000 National Merit Semifinalists identified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) this fall were recently confirmed as NMSC Finalists. They are: Hannah Cronin, Matthew Dardick, Linnea Dierksheide, Courtney Jope, Carina Kanzler, Luke Rozmus, Anshul Shah, Katherine Tomaska and Christopher Ziebert. These students were honored by proclamation of the Elmhurst District 205 Board of Education at its April 10 meeting.

“We are so incredibly proud of these students for their tenacious dedication to academia. They are being recognized for going above and beyond in an extraordinarily challenging selection process. I am thrilled for the students and the opportunities this will provide them moving forward,” said York High School Principal Erin DeLuga.

All NMSC Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships offered in 2018. The selection of some 7,500 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 Finalists is now in progress. Scholarship winners will be announced by NMSC in four groups from April through July.

Thus far, three York Finalists (Linnea, Carina and Katherine) have been named as recipients of $2,500 National Merit Scholarships. And two York Finalists have been selected as corporate sponsored scholarship winners: Anshul by Alliance Data Systems and Ashley by CDK Global, LLC.

The tradition continues with this year’s seventh Top Pizza Taste of Elmhurst event on Thursday, April 26, from 5:30-8:00 PM in the York High Campbell (Green & White) Gym. Local area restaurants and pizzerias will showcase their traditional and specialty variety pizza pies. The $10 entrance fee allows attendees to taste the variety of vendor offerings and vote for their favorites in a variety of categories. Past winners participating this year include Bacci, DiLeo, Fratello, Gulliver, Lou Malnati, Mama Maria and Roberto's. Newcomers include Aurelio's and Rosati's.

This is a great community fundraising event that allows families and friends to enjoy dinner and taste pizzas that are both familiar and new. For those families trying to juggle the Celebration of Learning night, it’s a great way to grab dinner before or after. Please note that the time has been extended to 8 PM so that you can continue the celebration.

Seniors and Juniors -
On the morning of April 3, Prom tickets will go on sale for seniors only. Juniors will be able to purchase tickets starting Friday morning, April 6. The bookstore will be open by 7:15am and will be open until 3:30pm each day.

Please note, no students will receive tardy passes to class because you are waiting in line to purchase tickets. If you have a 1st period class, you are required to be in that class at 7:40am.

A few reminders:

1.) You need to fill out the google form before you purchase tickets to receive your confirmation number.

2.) You will need to have your prom ticket application form printed and signed by your parents.  If you are bringing a NON-York Guest, you will need the bottom half completed as well. You must also have a guest form filled out from your Dean.

3.) If you are buying your ticket and your date's ticket, you must have your ticket application form and your date's application form when you purchase your tickets.

4.) Bus assignments are made at the time of purchase. If you are wanting to sit with friends, you must buy your tickets at the same time. NO BUS CHANGES WILL BE MADE AFTER PURCHASING TICKETS. Students are not allowed to swap or trade tickets either.

If you are missing any paperwork, you will not be able to purchase tickets until you have all completed it.

For the second time in the last three years, York’s Euro Challenge Team took first place in the Midwest Region competition, beating out eight other teams representing Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota. Participating students must be in either 9th or 10th grade.

 

The first-place York team is comprised of seven sophomores: Samantha Cruz, Emily Dow, Brian Kelley, Matt Kentra, Emmet McGovern, Ally Splitstone and Matt Splitstone. The team was presented with the challenge of choosing a country in the European Union, a problem the country has, and a solution to the problem. They chose to tackle Italy's high unemployment rate using monetary policy. The students were required to give a 15-minute presentation and participate in a 10-minute Q & A follow-up.

 

The final round takes place on April 26 at the New York Federal Reserve in New York City. There are 12 regions across the country; a total of 24 teams from across the country will be competing. The York team is coached by Tamra Carl.

The Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 Summer Music Program offers an exciting opportunity for all current 4th - 8th grade band and orchestra students and all current 6th - 8th grade choir students to continue practicing in an ensemble during the summer. Consistent, regular practice during the summer helps students to retain and reinforce concepts and skills that they have learned during the school year and helps them continue to learn and grow as young musicians.

  • Summer Band and Orchestra for current elementary students will run June 4 through June 29 at Sandburg Middle School. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Friday mornings. Each rehearsal is one hour. The final performances will be on Friday morning, June 29 at Sandburg Middle School.
  • Summer Band, Orchestra, and Choir for current middle school students will run June 4 – July 6 at York High School from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Band and Orchestra rehearsals will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Choir rehearsals will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings. There will be no rehearsals on July 3rd and 4th. The final performance will be on Friday, July 6 at York High School.
  • The registration fee for all levels is $92.00. The fee includes a Summer Music Program T shirt.
  • Middle School Summer Band and Orchestra students may also participate in Jazz Band at no additional cost.
  • Middle school students who register for summer band or orchestra may also enroll in choir at no additional cost.

The Dist. 205 Summer Music Program welcomes students who will be on vacation for some rehearsals and/or participate in other summer activities. Students who can only attend part of the summer program are still strongly encouraged to register and attend as often as they can! Students who practice during the summer are much more likely to experience continued success in band, orchestra, and choir. We strongly encourage your child to participate as much as they are able!

What is a PLC? In District 205, PLCs play an important role in promoting student growth and building the capacity of our teachers. But what is a PLC and what is its function?

PLC stands for Professional Learning Community. PLCs are designed to ensure high levels of teacher collaboration focused on student learning. They can take many forms. Examples include ensuring that teachers of the same grade level or subject area, as well as instructional coaches, special education teachers and support staff, have time to analyze assessment data, share best practices for success, and plan for future learning.

PLC groups meeting during student late arrival days, institute days and also during the school day at various times throughout the week.

York Community High School's Math team competed this week at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) regional competition held at Glenbard East High School. The team competed in the 4AA Division and took 1st place in the Region 9 competition, qualifying them to compete at State in May.

 

The team competed in ten events: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Calculator Team, Freshman/Sophomore 2-Person, Junior/Senior 2-Person, Freshman/Sophomore 8-Person​, Junior/Senior 8-Person, and the Orals Competition.

 

Members of the team placed 1st in 7 out of 10 competitions and also placed 3rd in the Freshman/Sophomore 2-person round and 2nd in the Algebra 1 competition.

 

The final standings are as follows:

Algebra 1​ -​ 2nd place overall, freshmen Aaron Taub placed 3rd and Ethan Thieme placed 1st;

Geometry -​ 1st place overall, Dylan Mahoney placed 3rd individually;

Algebra​​ 2​ -​ 1st place overall, Joseph Black and Jacob Wit tied for 3rd individually and William Phillips took 1st;

Pre-calculus - 1st place overall, Siva Sreedhar placed 5th, Courtney Jopes placed 3rd and Anshul Shah placed 1st individually;

Calculator Team​ -​ 1st place overall, members ​​included Timothy Baer, Daniel Sussman, Jacob Wit, Dylan Mahoney and Aaron Taub;

Freshman Sophomore 2-Person​ -​ 1st place overall, members included Dylan Mahoney and Joseph Gemini;

Junior/Senior 2-Person​ -​ 1st place overall, members ​​included​ Siva​ ​Sreedhar and Anshul Shah;

Freshman/Sophomore 8-Person - placed 3rd with sophomores Joey Gemini, Emily Dow, John Devine, Margaret Clink and freshmen Jackson Lukas, Joanna Sieracki, Ethan Thieme and Maddy van Heukelum;

Orals Competition Markov Chains - 1st place overall, with Siva Sreedhar, assisted by William Phillips, scoring near perfect presentation marks.

 

Linda Lahti and Nancy Mordini serve as team coaches. The State competition will be held May 5th at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campaign.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

 

In accordance with the Child and Student Health Examination and Immunization Code, Part 665.240 (l) (2) any child entering the 12th grade shall show proof of having received 2 doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine prior to entering the 12th grade. The first dose shall have been received on or after the 11th birthday, and the second dose shall have been received on or after the 16th birthday, and at least 8 weeks after the first dose.

 

Please discuss with your child’s medical provider to determine if he/she has received the two meningococcal conjugate vaccinations.  You are required to have your child receive this vaccination if it has not already been given.  The medical provider must provide the dates the vaccine was given, along with the medical provider’s signature.  You must provide the required proof of immunization to the York High School Health Office by May 15th, 2018 .  Without proof of this vaccination, your child will be excluded from school in the fall of 2018, as described in the School Code of Illinois and per Elmhurst District 205 procedure.  Students who have been excluded from school will not be able to attend any classes or participate in any athletic or extracurricular activities until the required proof of vaccination is provided.
