York Community High School

English 10 Honors

Grade 10 /  Full Year High Weighted Course - 2.0 credits

Prerequisite: Students must have earned credit for English 9 or 9 Honors.  Students are strongly encouraged to enroll in English 10 Honors upon teacher recommendation.

Students in 10H refine their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while examining the role of culture in the life of both the individual and society. Moreover, as a pre-AP course, 10H introduces students to close analysis of authorial choices by examining the purpose behind particular literary techniques including, but not limited to, the use of satire.  Students will consistently engage in discussion as a means of generating ideas and work to understand and validate opposing interpretations of the text and guiding inquiry.  Generally speaking, 10H is set apart from E10 in the increased pacing, amount of independent practice and the level of sophistication expected not only in the student’s writing but also in his or her ability to navigate the texts and derive complex interpretations.  10H encourages students to grow as self-directed learners in working to achieve high levels of success in demonstrating the skills necessary to be successful in AP Language and Composition. There is a general expectation that students who enroll in 10H are preparing to enroll in  Advanced Placement Language and Composition as juniors.
